We were promised sufferings. They were part of the program. We were even told, 'Blessed are they that mourn, ' and I accept it. I've got nothing that I hadn't bargained for. Of course it is different when the thing happens to oneself, not to others, and in reality, not imagination. C.s. Lewis
About This Quote

The sentence above is attributed to Ernest Hemingway. It's interesting that the English language contains the words "sufferings" and "suffer" which are both synonyms for pain, but the sentence actually refers to the way that Hemingway endured his own personal suffering. Hemingway himself was a very private person, but many of his works were dedicated to things he saw during his life. His later works are very dark, but I imagine they are based on reality rather than imagination.
